Replacing the Elkay 51300C Filter

Tools You'll Need

Phillips or flathead screwdriver

Access to water shut-off valve

Towel for potential drips

The 6 Steps for Replacing the Elkay 51300 Filter

1. Access the filter compartment: Unscrew and remove the four screws from the bottom of the cooler to take off the lower cover (shroud).

2. Shut off water and relieve pressure: Turn off the water supply valve, then dispense water from the bubbler or bottle filler until it stops to release any remaining pressure.

3. Remove the old filter: Grasp the used filter and turn it a quarter turn clockwise to detach it from the filter head, then carefully dispose of it.

4. Prepare the new filter: Remove the protective red cap from the new Elkay 51300C filter.

5. Install the new filter: Insert the new filter into the filter head, then turn it fully counterclockwise until it's securely locked in place. Ensure the blue label is facing forward and clearly visible.

6. Flush the system: Turn the water supply back on, then dispense at least two gallons of water through the bottle filler to purge air and flush out any loose carbon particles (initial flow may be sputtery but will smooth out).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Replacing the Elkay 51300C filter is simple when done correctly, but small errors can lead to leaks, poor water flow, a filter light that won't reset, or even reduced filtration performance. Here are the most frequent pitfalls and how to prevent them:

  • Using a non-genuine or off-brand filter
Elkay filters have a built-in RFID tag that communicates with the unit's sensor. Generic or third-party filters often lack this, so the filter status light will not reset (it may stay red or flash), even if the filter works otherwise. Stick to authentic Elkay 51300C filters for proper reset and full compatibility.

  • Installing the filter upside down or misaligned
The filter has a blue label that must face forward (toward you) when inserted. Incorrect orientation prevents the RFID sensor from reading it properly and can cause leaks or improper sealing. Double-check alignment before turning counterclockwise to lock.

  • Forcing or cross-threading the filter
The filter installs with a gentle 1/4-turn by hand—never use tools or excessive force. Forcing it can damage the threads, O-rings, or head, leading to leaks or difficulty removing it next time.

  • Skipping the flushing step or not flushing enough
New filters release harmless carbon fines, causing black/gray water initially. Dispense at least 2 gallons (or until water runs clear) after installation. Insufficient flushing leads to discolored water, complaints about taste, or clogged dispensers.

  • Not relieving water pressure before removal
Dispense water briefly or open a downstream faucet to release pressure. This prevents a sudden spray when removing the old filter.

  • Forgetting to check for leaks after reinstalling the cover
After securing the lower shroud and restoring power/water, run the unit and inspect around the filter head for drips. A loose fit or damaged O-ring (rare but possible) can cause ongoing leaks.

By avoiding these, you'll ensure a smooth installation, proper reset, clean water right away.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I replace the Elkay 51300C filter?

Replace the filter every 3,000 gallons of water dispensed (approximately 19,200 20-oz bottle fills) or after 12 months, whichever comes first. Most ezH2O models have indicator lights: green (good), yellow (about 10% life left), and red (replace now). On enhanced models, water dispensing stops when the light turns red.

What tools do I need to replace the filter?

You'll only need a manual screwdriver to remove the base panel screws. Access to the water shut-off valve is also required.

How long does the replacement process take?

The entire process typically takes 10-15 minutes for most standard Elkay ezH2O models.

Is the Elkay 51300C filter compatible with my bottle filling station?

The 51300C is the standard replacement filter for most Elkay ezH2O bottle filling stations and WaterSentry Plus systems. Some models (like certain LMASMB units) use the 56192C instead — contact us to confirm.

Will the indicator light reset automatically?

Yes, on most modern Elkay ezH2O models, the filter status light (green/yellow/red) resets automatically when a genuine new filter is installed. This is due to a built-in RFID chip in authentic Elkay filters that the unit detects.

For older (non-enhanced) ezH2O models without RFID technology, the light does not reset automatically. You'll need to reset it manually:

  1. Remove the top cover of the bottle filling station (usually secured by two Torx screws).
  2. Locate the program/reset button (often a small black toggle switch or button on the top right of the control board).
  3. Press and hold the button for about 2-5 seconds until the display changes (it may show "rESEt FLtR", "FLTR = 0", or similar).
  4. Press again if prompted to confirm.
  5. The filter status light should turn green.
  6. Replace the top cover and secure the screws.
