The Everpure EV927085 (PBS-400) Drinking Water System is a 3,000-gallon under-sink drinking water system, a quick-change cartridge on a QL3 head with a built-in shut-off, for residential prep sinks, pot fillers, and wet bars. It is built for homeowners and installers who need filtered water through the existing cold water line, with no separate faucet.
This Everpure EV927085 System Installation guide covers first-time installation, which takes an estimated 15–30 minutes. An expired cartridge stops filtering effectively and water quality drops, so for later cartridge changes, see our Everpure EV927086 (PBS-400) Filter Replacement Guide.
Safety & Preparation
Choose the Mounting Location
The system needs an under-sink space of 5" W x 20" H x 5" D (13 x 51 x 13 cm). That space includes 2½" of clear room below the unit, so the cartridge can be pulled straight down during future changes. Pick a spot that stays easy to reach. The exact mounting height and orientation are set in Step-by-Step Installation.
🔍 Before you start: the system connects to a 3/8" cold water supply line, and that line needs a working shut-off valve so the water can be closed off before you disconnect anything.

⚠️ Safety Precautions
Step-by-Step Installation
The steps below follow the manual's order for an Everpure EV927085 system installation, from marking the mounting spot to activating the filter timer.
Common Installation Mistakes
These are the mistakes most likely to cause leaks, low flow, or a cartridge that won't seat, each with its fix. Where another section covers the requirement, the link points back to it:
The system is built for cold water only. Connect it to the cold supply, and keep the water temperature and pressure within the limits in Safety & Preparation.
The manual calls for hand-tightening the faucet line onto the outlet union, because extra force can damage the fittings. If the connection drips, reseat the line and hand-tighten it again instead of reaching for the wrench.
The head and cartridge must hang vertically, with 2½" of clear space below the unit for cartridge changes. If either is off, remount the head before connecting water. The space and mounting requirements are in Safety & Preparation and Step-by-Step Installation.
With too little room above the head, the built-in shut-off handle can't open and close fully, and the braided line can crimp. Lower the head or reroute the line so the handle moves freely and the hose runs without sharp bends.
The supply hose goes to the inlet on the left side of the head, and the faucet line goes to the outlet on the right. If they are reversed, close the cold water valve and swap the two connections.
The 3/8" NPT threads on both union fittings and the elbow need plumber tape wrapped in the direction of the threads. Missing or backward-wrapped tape can cause small leaks. Remove the fitting, rewrap the threads, and reinstall it.
If the cartridge lug isn't lined up with the label on the head, or the cartridge stops short of the full quarter turn, it isn't locked in. Realign the lug, push the cartridge upward, and turn it to the right until rotation stops.
Using the water before the flush is complete skips the step that readies a new cartridge for use. Run the full flush in step 6 of Step-by-Step Installation before first use.
What to Expect After Installation
With the cold water valve open, check the elbow, both union fittings, and the filter head for drips. Then lower the shut-off handle and confirm a steady flow at the faucet.
Water that looks cloudy or sputters at first is caused by trapped air and loose carbon from the new cartridge. It clears during the flush in step 6 of Step-by-Step Installation. Cloudiness that lasts more than a week is not normal and is a sign to recheck the installation. Compare what you see against the two columns below:

Official Product Resources
The manufacturer's PBS-400 installation manual has the full setup instructions in English, Spanish, and French, along with the system's performance data. The spec sheet covers capacity, flow rate, operating limits, and the system's NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 certifications.
When to Replace Your Filter Cartridge
Replace the cartridge as soon as any one of these three limits is reached, whichever comes first:
The cartridge's rated capacity (11,356 L).
Replace the cartridge once flow at the faucet drops too low for everyday use.
Even if the first two limits haven't been reached, replace the cartridge once a year at the latest.
The filter timer activated during installation is the visual cue. When its white window is completely filled with red, it's time to replace the cartridge.
The replacement is the Everpure EV927086 PBS-400 quick-change cartridge, listed on BFS for the EV927085 system and its QL3 filter head. It is sold as a single cartridge and as the EV927087 6-pack. To stay on schedule without tracking dates, the EV927086 subscription is a set-it-and-forget-it option, with one cartridge delivered every 12 months.
How to Maximize the Lifespan of Your Filter
A few routine habits keep the system working as installed and each cartridge on schedule:
- Log the install date: keep it with the schedule in When to Replace Your Filter Cartridge, and use the filter timer as a backup reminder.
- Stay within the operating limits: the water type, temperature, and pressure ranges are in Safety & Preparation.
- Keep the lines and clearance clear: make sure the filter head and braided lines stay free of kinks, and keep the space below the cartridge open and easy to reach.
- Inspect the fittings now and then: check the fittings and tubing for leaks, and reseat any connection that drips.
- Wipe the exterior with a mild cleaner: use a mild, non-abrasive cleaner on the outside surfaces only.
- Treat questionable water first: unsafe or unknown-quality water needs disinfection before it runs through the system, as noted in Safety & Preparation.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
Does the system need a separate faucet?
No. The system connects to your existing cold water line, so filtered water comes from your existing faucet without a separate drinking water faucet.
Which cartridge fits the system?
The EV927086 PBS-400 quick-change cartridge fits the EV927085 system and its QL3 filter head. It is also sold as the EV927087 6-pack. Buying options are in When to Replace Your Filter Cartridge.
How long does the Everpure PBS-400 Drinking Water System installation take?
The estimated install time is 15 to 30 minutes. The full sequence is in Step-by-Step Installation.
How long should the new cartridge be flushed?
Flush it at full flow for at least 3 minutes before first use. The flush is step 6 of Step-by-Step Installation.
Why is the water cloudy at first?
Trapped air in the filter and lines, along with loose carbon from the new cartridge, causes early cloudiness or sputtering. It clears with the flush and normal use, but cloudiness lasting more than a week is not normal and is a sign to recheck the installation. More detail is in What to Expect After Installation.
What causes a leak at the head or fittings?
Most leaks come from plumber tape that is missing or wrapped against the threads on the union and elbow fittings, a cartridge that is not aligned with the head label or not turned until rotation stops, or a loose connection. Recheck each point, keeping in mind that the outlet union is hand-tightened only. The fix for each is in Common Installation Mistakes.
Why is flow slow after installation?
Slow flow after installation usually means the cold water shut-off valve isn't fully open, the shut-off handle on the head isn't lowered, or a braided line is kinked. Check all three. Layout fixes are in Common Installation Mistakes.
Can it be used on a hot water line?
No. The system is for cold water use only. The full temperature and pressure limits are in Safety & Preparation.
Can it be used on unknown or unsafe water?
Not without adequate disinfection before or after the system. Systems certified for cyst reduction may be used on disinfected water that may contain filterable cysts.
How do I know when to replace the cartridge?
Replace it at 3,000 gallons, when flow becomes too slow, or at least once a year, whichever comes first. The filter timer is the visual cue: when its window turns fully red, the cartridge is due. Replacement options are in When to Replace Your Filter Cartridge.
What does the system reduce, per its NSF/ANSI certifications?
It is tested and certified by NSF International against NSF/ANSI Standards 42 and 53. Standard 42 covers chlorine taste and odor and Class I particulates (0.5 to under 1 micron). Standard 53 covers lead and cysts such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia, reduced by mechanical means. The full performance data is in the manual, linked in Official Product Resources.

Conclusion
The PBS-400 installs in seven steps: mark the mounting spot, assemble and mount the head, connect the supply and faucet lines, lock in the cartridge, check for leaks, flush, and activate the filter timer. Before using the water, make sure every connection is dry and the flush is complete.
From there, replace the cartridge on the schedule in When to Replace Your Filter Cartridge, or let the subscription handle the timing. Keep a spare EV927086 on hand, and use our Everpure EV927086 (PBS-400) Filter Replacement Guide when it's time for the next change.
