What are the Filter First Requirements?

Here are the primary requirements per the State of Michigan's website:

Eligible use of funds may include:

Filtered bottle-filling station
 (meeting all the following requirements):

Is connected to customer site piping.

Filters water and is certified to meet NSF/ANSI standard 53 for lead reduction and NSF/ANSI standard 42 for particulate removal.

The flow rate through the station is paired to the specified flow rate of the filter cartridge.

Has a light or other device to indicate filter cartridge replacement status.

Is designed to fill drinking bottles or other containers for personal water consumption.

Includes a drinking fountain.

The station is certified to meet NSF/ANSI standard 61 Q<=1.

Tap-mounted water filters

  • Must be certified to meet NSF/ANSI standard 53 for lead reduction and NSF/ANSI standard 42 for particulate removal.

Water filter pitchers

  • Must be certified to meet NSF/ANSI standard 53 for lead reduction and NSF/ANSI standard 42 for particulate removal.

Universal cartridge water filters

Must be filter cartridges featuring molded collars for the purpose of filtering organic and synthetic materials from drinking water in locations of need.

Must be certified to meet NSF/ANSI standard 53 for lead reduction and NSF/ANSI standard 42 for particulate removal.

Drinking Water Management Plan (DWMP):

Schools and childcare centers must develop a DWMP by January 24, 2025, to outline how they will ensure safe drinking water.

Installation of Filters:

Schools must install approved lead-reducing filters (e.g., filtered bottle-filling stations, tap-mounted filters, or pitchers) on all fixtures used for drinking or cooking by the end of the 2025-2026 school year.

Childcare centers must ensure all water provided to children comes from a filtered source by October 24, 2025.

Testing and Maintenance:

Schools are required to test filtered water annually.

What kind of maintenance is required for these products?

Filter Maintenance

The filter should be replaced when the LED filter status indicator (if applicable) turns red (indicating the end of its life) or at least every 6-12 months, depending on usage and water quality.

Cleaning

Clean the unit every 6 months or as needed to maintain hygiene and appearance.
